5:03 p.m. - 05.19.2004 Today there was a reading by actors (as opposed to just students in the class) at school of part of my play. It went really well and I was very happy. A bunch of people whose opinions I respect came up to me afterwards to talk about it and say how much they liked it. The show this weekend in Louisville was awesome, by the way. Paul Westerberg played by himself and was wonderful as usual, although he was having trouble with the monitors. At the end of his set he smashed his guitar, which I've never seen him do before. Paul is one of my all time favorite rockstars. Two summers ago my friends and I traveled to 6 different cities to see him on tour. Sonic Youth played next and what can I say about them besides they WERE FUCKING AMAZING. We were in the front row on the right side and Thurston Moore was right in front of us, literally right in front of us. He knocked over a bunch of amps and was very Thurston-like, all shaggy headed and still wearing a long-sleeved button down shirt. Kim was still every bit the rockstar in glittery white high heels and a short skirt. I love her voice. They blew me away. I've been playing "Little Trouble Girl" on repeat ever since I got home. Patti Smith was next, she said, "I'm only going to play songs off of the first album (Horses) and the new album. If you want to hear everything in between come see me this summer!" That was exactly what I wanted to hear, too; Horses and the new stuff. She's so tiny and her voice is still amazing. Have you ever read Please Kill Me? There are so many great stories about her in that book. She rules. Polyphonic Spree was next. There are 23 people in the band, all wearing a different color choir robe. They put on a great show, it was so uplifting and happy. I'd wanted to see them for a while and I was not disappointed. It was a great time. There were numerous sightings of Patti Smith in our hotel; in the elevator, at breakfast, etc. Our room was pretty sweet, too. The shows were right next to the hotel so it was extra convenient. For some reason I managed to get a ton of sleep, which I really, really needed. Now I have to prepare an oral report that I have to give tomorrow. I hope everyone is doing well!
